CDL Road Test

Q.: When is an applicant required to take a CDL road test to receive a commercial driver license?

A.: When you are getting a CDL for the first time, to remove a vehicle size/equipment restriction on your existing license, to add a “P” or “S” endorsement, to renew a CDL expired more than 2 years. (In other words, when any major change or upgrade to your CDL takes place).

Explanation: Driving tests are not required to renew a CDL unless it has been expired for 2 years or more. To receive a CDL for the first time, you’ll need to pass: a vision test, knowledge tests, and performance (pre-trip, driving, and skills) tests. In addition, most employers will require that you pass one of their own “road tests” in one of their trucks before you are hired as a company driver.
